For more than ten years, the New York Giants have been working to improve their offensive line and field a strong
team. The main causes of their problems have been inadequate coaching and a failure to identify talent.
But the Giants, who fired Bobby Johnson following the conclusion of the 2023 regular season, are looking to hire a
new coach once more.
This past season, the Giants’ passing unit was the lowest ranked, giving up 267 pressures and 45 sacks per PFF.
Given that the Pittsburgh Steelers, who had the 31st-ranked pass-blocking team, allowed 219 pressures and 22 sacks,
those figures are nearly unbelievable. To give you an indication of how horrible they were, the Giants gave up almost
50 more pressures and more than twice as many sacks.
To assist strengthen the offensive line, the Giants will turn to Carmen Bricillo, a former member of the coaching staff
of the Las Vegas Raiders.
Several coaches were expected to go after Josh McDaniels was dismissed in Vegas, and the Giants determined
Bricillo was the right guy for the job because he had assisted the Raiders in fielding a top-ranked offensive line the
previous season.
The fact that they allowed 168 pressures and 28 sacks actually helped them rank as the 13th-best pass-blocking unit.
It is significant to remember that the Raiders’ offensive line had significantly less resources than the Giants’, and a
number of the team’s main starters were either mid- to late-round draft selections or journeymen. Actually, at one
point, two of their starters were undrafted free agents.
Despite his success with the Raiders, Jordan Raanan of ESPN claimed that he wasn’t the players’ favorite coach and
that his dubious methods—which evidently produced results—were effective.
In all honesty, the Giants haven’t had a truly good coach in a long time, and the ones that they have had have used
questionable methods. The Giants urgently need to bolster a unit that has completely derailed their offense and
ruined any hope of Daniel Jones being a franchise quarterback. Bricillo’s system appears to work.
