Under head coach Mike Macdonald, the Seattle Seahawks are poised to appoint Jay Harbaugh as their special teams coordinator, a source told ESPN on Monday.
The 34-year-old Harbaugh worked under his father, Jim Harbaugh, at the University of Michigan for the previous five seasons in that capacity. The younger Harbaugh will now rejoin Macdonald in Seattle, having originally planned to follow his father to Los Angeles to coach for the Chargers, according to an Ann Arbor News article from last week.
![Zenitz] Although reports have Jay Harbaugh to the #Chargers as being a done deal, that's not the case at this point. For two seasons, Macdonald and Jay Harbaugh worked together as coaches. In 2014, Macdonald was the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens, and in 2021, the two were at U-M. In 2008, Harbaugh started his coaching career at Oregon State where he worked for four years as an undergraduate assistant. After working as an offensive quality control coach for the Ravens for three seasons (2012–2014), he joined Jim Harbaugh at Michigan, where he most recently worked with safeties and tight ends. Jay Harbaugh was elevated to coordinator in 2019 after serving as special teams assistant coach from 2015 to 2018.
While Jim Harbaugh was serving a suspension in September of last year, Jay Harbaugh led Michigan to victory over UNLV in the first half of the game as an interim head coach.
Larry Izzo, who oversaw Seattle’s special teams for the previous four seasons under former coach Pete Carroll, is replaced by Jay Harbaugh. Since Macdonald was named head coach last week, Harbaugh is the first coordinator and second assistant to join Seattle’s coaching staff. Leslie Frazier has also been appointed by Macdonald as an assistant head coach.
