Sean McVay, the head coach of the Rams, now has the authority to alter league rules if he isn’t satisfied with
them. or at the very least, to participate in conversations about altering it. Along with Bills head coach Sean
McDermott, the head coach of Los Angeles was named to the NFL Competition Committee this week. The two
coaches will meet for the first time in 2024 when they join the group shortly.
The eight-person committee includes McDermott and McVay in addition to Mike Tomlin as coaches.

The committee examines every competitive element of the game, including prospective modifications to the rules
of play, concerns about player safety, officiating, technological use, roster policies, and other facets of gameday
operations.
Kickoffs and the potential prohibition on hip-drop tackles are two topics the committee is anticipated to explore
during the offseason.
The committee is chaired by Rich McKay of the Falcons and comprises the following members: Mike Tomlin of
the Steelers, Giants co-owner, Cowboys senior vice president Stephen Jones, Chris Grier of the Dolphins, Katie
Blackburn of the Bengals, and John Mara of the Giants.

It’s noteworthy that McVay would assume this new role just a year after acknowledging that he considered
retiring before rejoining the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. This is an additional position for McVay and an
opportunity to have a long-term impact on the NFL because he has stated that he is back in it for the long haul,
not just a one- or two-year stint.
