The Kansas City Chiefs have re-signed defensive tackle Mike Pennel for the 2023 practice squad. This was disclosed
by newly re-signed linebacker Drue Tranquill to media on Wednesday morning.
While discussing defensive tackle Chris Jones, who was also recently re-signed, Tranquill unintentionally revealed
the information.
“I felt like [with] a lot of Chris’ production, you see the sacks, you see the TFLs,” Tranquill remarked. “I was talking
to our guys this morning as we headed over to sign — Mike Pennel and Deon Bush.” However, most of it is
concealed. Teams must take him into account in a way that frees up other players.
Matt Derrick of Chiefs’ Digest, a friend of the site, made it reportable a few minutes later, although he made sure to
give Tranquill credit for the assist.
Pennel, an undrafted free agent who signed with the Green Bay Packers in 2014, initially came to Kansas City in 2019
as a backup inside defender and quickly established himself as a reliable run-stopper. After playing for the Chiefs
through the 2020 campaign, he spent two seasons with the Chicago Bears and the Atlanta Falcons.
Pennel was upgraded for three regular-season games and all four postseason games after joining Kansas City’s
practice squad in late October. During the postseason run, he recorded 23 tackles (10 solo), a tackle-for-loss, two
quarterback hits, and a pass defense.

The 32-year-old Pennel, who was raised in Topeka, Kansas, across the street, appears to be returning for a while.
