As of March 13, the Kansas City Chiefs have signed multiple free agents, added tight end Irv Smith Jr., and let go of
three free agents overall.
When you win a championship, let alone two in a row, you inevitably lose. The two players who left the team most

victory, a parade picture, and a post-Super Bowl celebration picture. Among the few guys who played on all three
championship teams with Mahomes and Andy Reid is him, recently were offensive lineman Nick Allegretti and
linebacker Willie Gay Jr. On March 13, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II publicly bid his two teammates
farewell.
“One of my greatest ever teammates!” In response to Allegretti’s farewell post on X, Mahomes said, “Congrats on
everything, brotha! 💪🏽.” The team had been home to the previous seventh-round pick since 2019.
Mahomes also said to Gay in a similar quote post that he is “going to miss you, brotha! 💪🏽.” In 2020, Gay was
picked one year after Allegretti.
Allegretti stated after the season that he would like to aim for a starting spot in 2024. The dependable backup would
be hitting free agency with Joe Thuney and Trey Smith ahead of him in Kansas City.
Ultimately, the interior blocker got what he wanted, a $16 million three-year award from the Washington
Commanders. Guaranteed money totaling more than $9 million accompanied the well-earned payout.
Allegretti took a moment to speak with Chiefs Kingdom on X on March 13, following his acceptance of the deal and
signing of his contract.

In the trenches, KC may have lost one important backup, but they also kept another. Mike Pennel, a seasoned
defensive tackle, is expected to make a comeback on March 13, the team revealed. In addition to the enormous
extension signed by Chris Jones, Pennel offers some much-needed defensive line interior insurance.
2019 saw Pennel sign with Kansas City, marking Reid’s team’s first Super Bowl appearance. Having left in 2021, the
32-year-old rejoined KC during the previous season. Despite playing in just seven games during the season, the nose
tackle had a significant influence.
In addition to the Chiefs going 6-1 in games that the big man suit up for, Pennel made seven appearances overall,
four of which came in the playoffs. He was tasked with supporting the run defense, which he accomplished
admirably. Pennel led the club in run-stop percentage (12.0%) and had an excellent average depth of tackle (1.3
yards) when he was assessed as a 67.3 by Pro Football Focus against the ground attack.
As a point of comparison, Jones’ stop rate was only 3.3% and his average depth of tackle was 1.3 yards. Nick Bolton, a
linebacker with the Chiefs, had the highest run-stop percentage of any starter with an 8.5%.
Four exclusive rights free agents had re-signed earlier in the week on March 11, according to Chiefs Digest source
Matt Derrick. These players were defensive end Malik Herring, linebacker/special team member Cole Christiansen,
guard/center Mike Caliendo, and cornerback Nazeeh Johnson.
