Since the NFL’s free agency era started on March 13, there hasn’t been a scarcity of signings. However, a few ESPN commentators have ranked the signing of wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown by the Kansas City Chiefs as the finest free agent acquisition.
When ESPN asked its panel of NFL analysts to rank the finest free agent signing to date, senior Andscape writer Jason Reid gave his explanation for why Brown to the Chiefs ranks at the top of the list.

Brett Veach, general manager of Kansas City, addressed the team’s main summer worry. In terms of passes dropped last season (38), the Chiefs led the league. Brown possesses exceptional speed and is an elusive runner after the catch, making him a potential difference-maker for Veach at the receiver position, Reid wrote on March 19. “Brown has 3,644 receiving yards and 28 touchdowns in his five NFL seasons. Since Tyreek Hill was traded to the Dolphins, he provides the Chiefs with their greatest deep threat.
Jordan Reid, an NFL Draft expert, thinks that Kansas City’s acquisition of Brown is the best free agent signing to date.
Reid noted, “It’s not a secret that the Chiefs’ receivers were underwhelming last season, outside of Rashee Rice.” The lack of downfield consistency throughout the previous season was a major hole in the plan. Brown provides that extra depth, becoming quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ top target right away.
Chiefs Contract With Hollywood Brown a Great Value:
Brown’s contract with the Chiefs is worth a maximum of $11 million and is for a duration of one year, $7 million. Despite the fact that Brown is returning from a season marred by injuries and attempting to restore his reputation, Kansas City managed to sign him to a contract that is less than what the market will bear.
Brown is worth a four-year contract for $59.5 million, or an average annual value (AAV) of $14.8 million, based on Spotrac’s estimated market value.

In order to put Brown’s Chiefs contract into context, Over The Cap lists Brown’s $7 million base pay for 2024 as ranking 34th out of all NFL receivers.
Hollywood Brown Ready to Play With ‘Passionate’ Patrick Mahomes:
At the Chiefs’ inaugural press conference on March 18, Brown gave a statement to the media on his decision to sign with the two-time defending Super Bowl champions.
Being able to play with Pat Mahomes and (Head) Coach Andy Reid contributed significantly to the winning culture, according to Brown. “When it came to the offensive, I thought I could contribute and blend in. There was reciprocal interest since all those things worked well on me, and that is really enticing.
Brown also discussed Mahomes and the reasons behind his desire to receive passes from the standout quarterback.
“Looking in from the outside, he seems like a really passionate guy, and I’m a really passionate person,” Brown remarked. “He will do whatever it takes to win because he wants to win. You want to play with someone who will bring out the best in you and help you advance your skills, and that’s the person you want to play with. He seems to be one of those men, in my opinion.
