When the experienced forward was traded by the Washington Wizards to the Detroit Pistons and then dismissed
hours later, Danilo Gallinari appeared to be the ideal target for a buyout by the Boston Celtics.
However, Gallinari’s promise to rejoin the Celtics was never fulfilled.
The 6-foot-10 sharpshooter was reportedly shown “interest” by the Celtics, but Gallinari told CLNS Media that
Boston was not a possibility for any of the other clubs that chased him because of collective bargaining agreement
regulations.
Gallinari stated, “If I’m not mistaken, the CBA rules didn’t allow me to go back to Boston,” on Wednesday before the
Celtics game at TD Garden. Six or seven teams were under my evaluation. I decided to travel to Milwaukee.
Naturally, it was a really peculiar year for me as I had never experienced beginning the season with three different
teams in one season. However, I suppose everything has a purpose. I’m glad to be here in Milwaukee right now.
Which CBA rule Gallinari was referring to is unclear. The non-taxpayer mid-level exception ($12.4 million) is the
maximum salary that the Celtics are able to sign, and Gallinari was eligible to rejoin the team after being dealt by the
Wizards. When Gallinari was first traded, his base pay was $6.8 million.
Naturally, though, returning to the court for Doc Rivers—Gallinari’s coach during his two seasons with the Los
Angeles Clippers—had to be an attraction in addition to playing for a club that was competitive for the NBA
championship.
Playing time for Gallinari has been minimal since he joined the Bucks. In 11 games, he has averaged 8.5 minutes and
just 2.2 points per game.
It’s been fantastic, Gallinari remarked. “I’ve previously played against a lot of guys and with some of the men for a
long time. These guys are a really good bunch. Naturally, everyone is aware of the goal we have in mind. That is
really significant to me.
However, Gallinari has continued to monitor his old squad, particularly as he pursues a championship with the
Celtics’ likely strongest rival in the Eastern Conference.
They are playing excellent basketball, according to Gallinari. “It will be an excellent match for us to assess our
current state.”
